me: back to school

I always hoped I could sing...

I always wanted to learn how to play piano...

I always wished I could draw better...

I decided to do something about one of these dreams.  I am officially a community college student.  I'll be taking Drawing I on Monday and Wednesday evenings starting on June 6.

I'm very excited, but also scared.  I've never taken a drawing class in my life and I haven't taken an art class since seventh grade.  I have no idea what supplies to take to the first class.  I want to wait and ask what sort of supplies to buy, but what if we have to draw something the first night?  Then I'll be the loser with no paper and no pencil.

On a scale of 1 to 10 (ten being highest) I would rate my drawing abilities at about a 1 or 2.  I am fully prepared to be the absolute worst student in the class.  Failing doesn't bother me because I know I'll learn something and be better in the end.

So has anyone taken an drawing class before?  Do you have any advice?

Oh it sounds like a lot of fun. Check to see if there is an on-line syllabus for the course. If so, they normally list all the supplies you will need for class. Also check the campus bookstore as they carry the list with all text books which are required. I wouldn't sweat it as the majority of courses I've taken gave out the syllabus at the first class which contained the list of required supplies. Have a great time!!!

Hey good for you! Let us know how it goes, it sounds like something I'd be interested in, I can't draw for toffee.

Good for you! I think you can expect everyone to be equally bad on day one of a drawing 1 class. That was my experience. It's all about the practice after that. Good luck!

Twenty five years ago I took the course, "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain." I was astounded at how well I could draw when I put my mind to it.

When you go to class, put everything else out of your mind and focus only on your drawing. Put as much energy into thinking about drawing as you would if you were working out a knotty tax problem. Set aside a half hour every day, turn your phones to silent and do nothing but draw. Again, focus on what you see and your drawing. I promise you that at the end of the course, you will be amazed at the skills you have built in yourself. Above all, have fun!

Recently I started taking pottery classes. I had no expectations at all and I think that was good. Just enjoy yourself and you'll know if and when it's right :)

Good. For. YOU! I also am trying my hardest to do "uncomfortable" things now that I am 30. Thus far I went ice skating for the first time and tried Sushi :)

I took an continuing education Drawing I class last year. It was my first college class in 20 years. I absolutely loved it. Like you, I was prepared to be the worst in my class. Honestly, I found that most people in the class had just as much, or as little ability as I did. I learned a lot. Good for you for taking a step.
