return on creativity: the ♥ bag

This bag has been quite a journey.  I first tea dyed the heart fabric almost a year ago.  Then I finally found the pattern I wanted on Rae's blog during Celebrate the Boy week.

The Scavenger Bag pattern by Sew Grown is supposed to be for a little boy, but I also think it makes a nice small purse for a woman, my sister to be exact.  Steffanie's tutorial for this bag is flawless and very easy to follow.  I only made a few slight modifications.

I hand embroidered a real heart on the front of the bag to complement my heart lining fabric.  I will admit this is strange, but my sister just finished nursing school and I'm hoping she will enjoy it.  I think it's hysterical, but I have a weird sense of humor sometimes.

When my sister was in school she once mentioned that some students had anatomy coloring books.  Of course, my first thought was, "Gee...that sounds like a great source book for embroidering human organs and body parts.  So I bought one.  She may be getting handmade gifts incorporating body parts for years to come.

Instead of the piping called for in the pattern, I cut my own bias tape from the heart lining fabric.  I did this mainly because I did not have any piping on hand when I was making the bag.

I also changed the inside of the bag.  Instead of an elasticized pocket (again, no elastic on hand) I sewed down the middle of my pocket to create two pockets.  Steffanie added many more gadgets to the bag for her little guy, but I just added a d-ring.

Now this little bag is ready for the last leg of its long journey from conception to gift.  I need to get to the post office and send it to my sister.

Check back later tonight for giveaway winners!

great project especially for those who love human anatomy— the rest can certainly embroider anything to their liking, and I actually have one of those coloring books too! Thanks so much for sharing on Craft Schooling Sunday, great to have you!

I'm an ICU nurse, and YES, this is AWESOME. Your sister will definitely love it...unless she's going into labor & delivery, but I wouldn't want to see what you'd have to embroider on a bag for that...I'm posting a link to your awesomeness in our ICU's Facebook group :)

I love it! My son had open heart surgery as a baby and I know a lot of other "heart moms" who would love this. Cheeky but also weirdly sentimental. That is kind of cool.
